Description
Anotherworld— sometimes referred to as otherworld, the dream, or simply "the magic world"— is the source of all magic and the parallel universe responsible for the presence of magic on Earth.
It is absolutely brimming with magical energy; so much, in fact, that it could not be contained and began spilling over into other universes. Through the powers of a certain kind of witch, this system of interconnected universes can be traversed and explored, creating the greater "anotherverse".
Presumably, it would be possible to explore beyond parallel Earths through space travel, but humans have not yet developed the technology to do so, and most anotherworld planets do not have their own version of humans to begin with.
The Anotherworld Event
In the Earth Gregorian Calendar year 2006, anotherworld's magical energies reached a fever pitch and began to overflow into our universe. The cause was highlighted as a very particular parallel to Earth's global warming, where magical pollutants in the air of anotherworld began to trap magical energies within its atmosphere. This event created a discreet magical connection between many local parallel universes, flooding the other worlds— which had never interacted with magic on such a scale before— with pure magical energy.
The result, at least in our universe, was a small portion of humanity simultaneously awakening to their magical potential. Over the next few years, a small but persistent community of magical humans began to form, and magic has been a poorly-kept secret ever since.
